Abstract When Horace was writing his Odes, love elegy was the genre very much en vogue in Rome. Horace’s collection also contains love poems, which are quite unlike the excessively passionate poems of Propertius and Tibullus. This article examines to what extent Horace’s Epicurean and moralistic Odes evoke and react to contemporary love elegy.
