Abstract This lemma is a concise analysis of the introduction, success and relevance of Spanish comedia on stage in the Dutch speaking realm. Spanish comedia played a pivotal role in the success of commercial theatre in the Dutch Republic of the Golden Age. The article not only highlights the attractiveness and popularity of the genre for Dutch audiences, but also deals with the Dutch marketing of the Spanish comedia and the celebrity cultus of popular Spanish playwrights such as Lope de Vega and Calderón
