Abstract The correlation between accreted mass and field which appears to hold for a class of binary millisecond pulsars is tested for wider applicability. When all known constraints from X-ray binaries and recycled pulsars are combined, no universal relation between amount of field decay and amount of accreted mass remains viable; other factors in the state or evolution of a system must be at least as important in determining the magnetic field.
