Abstract
In this dissertation we make use of the theories of stochastic processes and operations research to develop models and methods to be applied for the analysis and control of road traffic networks. Within this field three subjects are considered: individual routing, urban traffic light networks and motorways.
We explore the possibility of extending the applicability of well-known concepts such as proportional fairness or backpressure to road traffic situations and also introduce novel queueing models to capture the specific features of these networks. We discuss control schemes, which make use of the advancement in technology and improve the strategies currently in place. We analyse the performance of these algorithms by extensive simulation studies and prove some of their desirable properties rigorously.
In summary this book describes state-of-the-art control methods, which would improve road traffic conditions by making better use of the infrastructure, thus alleviating one of the growing pains of modern society.
