Measurement of the production of a W boson in association with a charmed hadron in pp collisions at βs = 13 TeV with the ATLAS detector

| Abstract |
The production of a π boson in association with a single charm quark is studied using 140ββfbβ1 of βπ =13ββTeV proton-proton collision data collected with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. The charm quark is tagged by the presence of a charmed hadron reconstructed with a secondary-vertex fit. The π boson is reconstructed from the decay to either an electron or a muon and the missing transverse momentum present in the event. The charmed mesons reconstructed are π·+βπΎββ’π+β’π+ and π·*+βπ·0β’π+β(πΎββ’π+)β’π+ and the charge conjugate decays in the fiducial regions where πTβ‘(π,π)>30ββGeV, |πβ‘(π,π)|<2.5, πTβ‘(π·(*))>8ββGeV, and |πβ‘(π·(*))|<2.2. The integrated and normalized differential cross sections as a function of the pseudorapidity of the lepton from the π boson decay, and of the transverse momentum of the charmed hadron, are extracted from the data using a profile likelihood fit. The measured total fiducial cross sections are πOSβSSΒ fidβ’(πβ+π·+)=50.2Β±0.2β’(stat)+2.4β2.3β’(syst)ββpb, πOSβSSfid
β’(π++π·β)=48.5Β±0.2β’(stat)+2.3β2.2β’(syst)ββpb, πOSβSSfidβ’(πβ+π·*+)=51.1Β±0.4β’(stat)+1.9β1.8β’(syst)ββpb, and πOSβSSfidβ’(π++π·*β)=50.0Β±0.4β’(stat)+1.9β1.8β’(syst)ββpb. Results are compared with the predictions of next-to-leading-order quantum chromodynamics calculations performed using state-of-the-art parton distribution functions. Additionally, the ratio of charm to anticharm production cross sections is studied to probe the π βπ Β―Β quark asymmetry. The ratio is found to be π Β±π=0.971Β±0.006β’(stat)Β±0.011β’(syst). The ratio and cross-section measurements are consistent with the predictions obtained with parton distribution function sets that have a symmetric π βΒ―π sea, indicating that any π βΒ―π Β asymmetry in the Bjorken-π₯ region relevant for this measurement is small. |
