Abstract This article conceptualises redlining in terms of a self-fulfilling prophecy. It explains the origins of redlining in the United States as well as development of redlining, anti-redlining struggles, and redlining research in the United States. It also deals with the scarce evidence of redlining outside the United States. Finally, it outlines a research agenda on redlining policies in the twenty-first century.
