Abstract
During the heyday of German idealism, philosophy implied the development of a system that would provide a key to account for everything – a grand unifying theory that would not be restricted to physical phenomena only. It is very unlikely that this will ever become main-stream philosophy again. The urge to develop a philosophical system that should be capable of grasping the world as a whole, including its past, its present and its future, has taken a well-defined place on the shelves of our philosophy libraries: a Romantic aberration, typical of the early 19th century and its 20th century aftermath.
