Abstract
This report summarises the findings of a conflict analysis and an assessment on transitional justice carried out by a joint team of the Facility on Justice in Conflict and Transition and the European Resource for Mediation Support (ERMES III) between February and April 2021. During the mission, the experts engaged a variety of stakeholders comprising government functionaries, the diplomatic community, civil society, and a large cross-section of people living in five Northwest Nigeria states (Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kebbi, and Kaduna) and Niger State. The experts used conflict analysis tools and fieldwork to investigate conflict dynamics and the root causes and spread of violence in Northwest Nigeria. The research also recorded local experiences and personal accounts of conflict and displacement, and investigated potential post-conflict challenges and the actions needed to enhance accountability and restore peace and co-existence, using a transitional justice framework.
