Abstract In Quebec, for several decades a wide range of professional social practices has been inspired by the ideas of adult education and community organization, both in the public sector and in the sphere of associations. This articles questions the ways in which such practices are justified, the social issues they aim to deal with, the forces behind their development and also the social and political anchorage of the know-how developed since the nineteen-fifties in this field.
