| Abstract |
Veldwerkers en vrouwen in en om Baskenland ‘Fieldworkers and their wives in the Basque Country’ deals with the lives, studies and travels of five Dutch linguists and their wives with a passion for the Basque Country and its language: Willem Jan van Eys, Christiaan C. Uhlenbeck, William Rollo, Nicolaas Deen and Rudolf de Rijk, the first born in 1825, the last deceased in 2003. Three of the ladies wrote diaries or made detailed notes about their experiences in the Basque Country, painting a picture of the fieldwork their husbands were carrying out and of the daily life at the time. Except for providing a glimpse in the world of linguistics, this book includes a ful translation in Dutch of the first book ever printed in Basque, Etxepare's collection of poems (Linguae Vasconum Primitiae, 1545). Furthermore it contains an overview of contacts which inhabitants of the Low Countries and of the Basque Country have maintained over a thousand years, a travel guide and a few pages of ‘How do I say this’ in Basque.
