Abstract In this thesis, the effect of blood transfusion on pulmonary inflammation and coagulation was studied. We investigated the role of different mediators in acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) or transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI). Furthermore, we tested several therapeutic strategies in murine models of both ARDS and TRALI. The effect of aspirin on TRALI incidence was tested. Lastly, we performed a systematic review on nebulized anticoagulants in the setting of lung injury in animals and humans.
