Abstract: Recent onderzoek heeft aangetoond dat het voor het orale microbioom niet altijd gunstig is om patiënten te behandelen met chloorhexidine. Daarnaast baart de groeiende groep bacteriën die resistent zijn tegen alle ontwikkelde antibiotica zorgen en kunnen 'te veel' hygiëne en infectiepreventie ook negatieve gevolgen hebben. Met drie verschillende voorbeelden - over het gebruik van chloorhexidine, het overdragen van dna tussen bacteriën en het uitwisselen van orale microben - wordt in dit artikel het belang van kennis over het orale microbioom in klinische situaties verduidelijkt.
