- Artists and theorists have frequently deliberated the meaning of the idea of ‘autonomy in art’, and certainly since the protests
against the cutbacks in art. Cultural studies specialist Joost de Bloois considers the present debate on this issue problematic
because it is based too much on assumptions. Fundamental contradictions within the art sector as well as its complex relation
to politics and the public domain are often ignored.
