Therapeutic clinical assessment
The treatment utility of clinical assessment is controversial, and the current managed health care environment increasingly demands proof of efficiency. Meanwhile, empirical research into the treatment utility of clinical assessment remains scarce, and is fraught with methodological shortcomings. That said, a review of the empirical literature shows that at least two clinical assessment strategies enjoy a solid evidence base for their efficacy: Therapeutic Assessment (ta) and Patient Focused Research (pfr). An analysis of their underlying mechanisms suggest that both approaches yield their incremental value by their contribution to the quality of individualized case formulation. Patients feel more understood and become more actively involved in their treatment. Therapists receive feedback that leads them to more timely and better-informed adjustments in their treatment planning. This public lecture argues for collaborative clinical assessment procedures, and a systematic dosing of clinical assessment contingent on the (expected) complexity and need for individualization: i.e. Stepped Clinical Assessment.
