The Netherlands Malacological Society has experienced two crises in its 75 years of existence, 1934-2009. The first one, in 1948, was about rules and regulations; the founders did not see the necessity of these and a secret ballot democratically elected a new president. This caused both the sitting president, a few council members and some other members and some other members to leave the society. The society, however, lived on and prospered until the second crisis in 1970. This time a somewhat incompetent president and a treasurer unwilling to relinquish his position (where he was ensconced for 22 years!) caused a motion of no-confidence to be submitted, which motion, however, was rejected. Following this, the council resigned and an interim council was installed for two years only. After that, the society again prospered until today.
