Abstract
This work recasts the history of technocultural ideas through a series of essays. The visions and ideologies informing the design and choice of technology are explored - from railways to the Internet and speed culture. The essays gradually develop a critique of technology promotion, inviting designers and developers to rethink the language of technology. By demonstrating the force of historical analogy for devising new cultural agendas, this work participates in the politics of expectation, and the redesign of contemporary technological culture.
