| Samenvatting | This study examines the relationship between regulation and innovation in the regulated markets. In particular, it investigates the relationships that rule-based and principle-based regulation have with radical and incremental innovation. In total, six in-depth interviews were performed among respected professionals from the Dutch financial industry. Ten attributes of regulation have been revealed, which illustrate the differences of the impact on innovation, that exist in the four relationships between rule-based and principle-based regulation with incremental and radical innovation. Based on these findings a conceptual model is presented that explains the impact of the ten attributes of regulation in all four relationships. The findings demonstrate that rule-based regulation is more suitable in supporting incremental innovations, while principle-based regulation is more suitable in supporting radical innovations. The findings of this paper offer insight on the relationship between regulation and innovation for policy making bodies and market regulators, when setting up, or enforcing regulation that support innovation. |
