| Samenvatting | Strong growth in emerging markets in Asia and Latin America has caused new opportunities for
economic development. These opportunities can be used to create higher economic growth.
Entrepreneurship is seen as an important driver of the economy and the engine of economic growth.
According to literature the percentage of people becoming an entrepreneur varies between countries
and cultures. In order to get a clear view how economic growth can be achieved, it is necessary to
know how the development of entrepreneurship is created and what causes the difference of
entrepreneurship between countries.
In this thesis the development of entrepreneurship will be looked upon, and the possible
effects of culture on this development. Specifying the subject of this thesis to the effect of the Dutch
culture on the development of Dutch entrepreneurship. This because knowing what influences the
development of entrepreneurship can provide possible improvements of the current political
attributions.
Gartner's framework of new venture creation is used to identify the variables that describe the
development of entrepreneurship. To describe the effect of culture, two of the five cultural dimensions
of Hofstede's dataset are used. The dimensions of power distance and individualism are discussed
because these two dimensions can be seen as the link between culture and economic growth. Power
distance and individualism are of influence on the development of entrepreneurship, but if either this
influence is positive or negative is debatable. In different studies the effects of cultural dimensions on
entrepreneurship have been discussed, and different outcomes have been found, as well as in this
study.
It is found that the cultural dimensions analyzed in this study do have an influence on the
development of entrepreneurship, but there are also other dimensions of Gartner's framework that
affect the development of entrepreneurship in the Netherlands. In order to create economic growth and
to stimulate entrepreneurship the Dutch government should also take the other dimensions of Gartner's
new venture creation framework into account. |
