| Abstract | This paper tries to find out which stories about women’s lives are being (re) activated by looking at an episode of The Mary Tyler Moore Show. In order to do that it is necessary to take a closer look at Cultural Studies and the encoding/decoding model from Stuart Hall. This model gives my informants the status of ‘ active audience’, i.e. they are capable of giving meaning to texts that are produced by the screenwriters of the show. Through a discourse analyze I found out that there are three subjects that come up in every interviews. These subjects are neighborhood, work and social development. They help my informants to make sense of their lives and at the same time it provides me with a standard biography, i.e the unwritten rules about how to live your life. In order to be complete, the encoding/ model writes about two paths of ‘ giving meaning’ to a text, The Mary Tyler Moore Show needed a semiotic analyze. Mary Richards turns out to be feminine, by for example wearing a dress or a skirt, but is not harpy. At the end of the paper these two ways of giving meaning come together. It turns out that not Mary Richards provides my informants with a fantasy of another life. Furthermore the Mary Tyler Moore Show provides room to talk about your life and the choices you made in it. |
