SamenvattingThis human-computer interaction study examines if the attitudinal factors interpersonal warmth and physical attraction explain nonverbal cues in interpersonal attraction. If this explanation can be found, it will be possible for human aware systems that can measure nonverbal signals, to detect (the degree of) interpersonal attraction and the reason for the attraction. This information can then be used to improve interactions between humans and between human and machine. To find this explanation we chose a speed-date experiment because, of the short time of a date, the intensity of interactions is high (nonverbal and verbal) and because the result of the speed-date (match or no match) tells us if there was a high degree of interpersonal attraction. The results of the experiment show that the attitudinal factors interpersonal warmth and physical attractiveness cannot explain the nonverbal signals found in interpersonal attraction. The study shows however that there is a strong relationship between interpersonal warmth and a specific non-verbal signal, `increase in distance'. These finding suggest that it can be possible for robots and virtual agents to measure the quality of interaction with people and to improve this if necessary.
