| Samenvatting | According to [1] the difference function is a significant improvement over the autocorrelation function. However, the explanations given for the observed improvement are somewhat unsatisfactory. Here we provide a geometric argument that explains more clearly why the difference function performs so much better. It brings together ideas from three different approaches and provides them with a common
framework and a theoretical means of comparison. It also leads very naturally to ideas for improvement.
