SamenvattingRecent accounts of visual stort-term memory (VSTM) emphasise the role of an active mechanism that suppresses processing of distractor stimuli. Although evidence exists that alpha-band oscillations over posterior brain areas are the neural substrate of this mechanism, these studies tend to rely on correlational, rather than causational, evidence. The present study tested this hypothesis in a novel context by exposing participants to several days of EEG neurofeedback (NFB) training, designed to introduce asymmetries into the spread of posterior visual alpha, thus allowing the causal relationship between alpha and VSTM to be investigated. The hypotheses were that NFB training would alter subjects' visual alpha, and that this would affect subsequent performance on a cued spatial STM task. Results indicated that posterior alpha can be altered by NFB training, with a majority of subjects significantly increasing alpha lateralisation over the training period. However, these training effects were context-specific, and not systematically altered either behaviour or EEG during spatial STM task performance post-training. Several factors, such as the relative low subject number and NFB-non responders, are discussed that might explain this unexpected null finding.
