SamenvattingThe current relationship between media and politics is changing. A trend can be observed, where the media is gaining power as well as increasing their role in publishing political news. At the same time political media strategists try to control the perception of the public by framing their candidates. This modernization of politics is in line with the growing importance of image. In this study, the interaction between Dutch political parties and the Dutch media is explored. This contributes to the research question: To what extent is the image creation of a politician by the media similar to the image the media strategists intended to create? There is a comparison between the ways the media represent the image of certain politicians and the initial intentions the campaign team of the political parties had. Therefore this research provides a qualitative content analysis of newspaper articles on the image of three politicians that is compared with qualitative in-depth interviews with media strategists of these politicians. Results indicate that the campaign team of political parties deliberately choose their image strategies and the image of politicians. The media is critical in taking over this framed image and therefore these images do not completely match with one another. Results provide new insights in to the Dutch political landscape.
