SamenvattingBulletin Board System (BBS) has played dual role in Chinese online environment to inform and facilitate the expression of citizens. This study selected Tianya BBS, one of the most popular BBS sites in China, to reveal the online interaction of BBS articles. Specifically, Tianya Observation--online journal of Tianya BBS, offered the data base for this study. By analyzing both content and author of each article in Observation, this study aims to uncover the elements evoke active online interaction of BBS articles. 500 articles from 2010 to 2012 in Observation were selected to analyze, results showed that both content and author have influence on the involvement of BBS members. For instance, topics, references, conflicts in articles, credibility and activity of authors had positive effects on BBS interaction; while titles, pictures and expressions of articles, descriptive information of authors did not show any correlations with interaction. However, in general, opinion leader has a stronger effect on online interaction than content of articles. Furthermore, through qualitative interview with authors, this study presented the practical insights of BBS interaction. All in all, this study verified theories of existing studies on BBS interactive system and offered new measurement perceptions with latest samples. The results of this study reflect an image of the real online environment in China, and can be applied to actual use of BBS or BBS operation. Key words: online interaction, BBS, content
