SamenvattingResearchers investigated the effect of word and letter frequency on semantic memory using a lexical decision task in which participants had to decide whether an item was a word or a non-word. The task was administered in three blocks using the same 192 words and 192 different non-words. Words were divided into 4 groups, high frequent words with high and low frequent letters and low frequent words with high and low frequent letters. Results showed that, although letter frequency did have an impact on reaction time, the influence of word frequency was more dominant, with high frequent letters and words being recognized correctly faster than low frequent letters and words. A repetition priming effect was also found, participants got faster at correctly categorizing words and non-words with each block.
