| Samenvatting | Abstract This thesis touches upon topics of ethics, ontology, and metaphysics; the central focus is on the problems with finding direction and meaning in life in an uncertain, late-modern environment. Our era is characterized by a breakdown or exhaustion of traditions, a new form of uncertainty and an utterly open future. The ubiquity of choice in everyday life places a heavy burden on individuals. Question is: Can the late modern individual find meaning in his or her life without making use of frameworks altogether? Most philosophers agree that this is not really possible. Some contemporary authors have contemplated new, non-traditional ways of dealing with frameworks that suit the present-day individual. Recognizing the ongoing debate, this thesis aims to provide an answer to the following question: by what method, suitable for this time, can a person living in late modernity choose his identity and moral standards responsibly? I believe that the themes featured in discussion of the late modern situation show great resemblance to those featured in mid-century existentialism. Therefore, I have devoted much of this thesis to the existentialist deliberations of Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir on early modernity and finding meaning therein. Starting from the existentialist premises worked out by Sartre, De Beauvoir develops an ‘art of living’, which provides the individual with a set of procedural rules to follow when making moral decisions. In The Ethics of Ambiguity (1947), she provides a nontraditional framework that allows one to be proactive in an uncertain environment and lead an ‘authentic’ life, without referring to ‘given’ values or absolutes. I argue that De Beauvoir’s ethics constitutes a valuable contribution to the contemporary debate and may help individuals living in late modernity establish a working definition of the good life and lead their lives accordingly. |
