AbstractWe studied the role of information systems (IS) in Merger and Acquisitions (M&A). We developed a framework which may be used to analyse, describe and explain ideal types of IS integration in M&A. The frame consists of a strategic and a temporal M&A perspective and two main dimensions of M&A integration: market and organizational. For the strategic perspective: growth is identified as one of the main drivers for M&A, which may be achieved by operational capability (synergy) and/ or innovation capability (knowledge). The IS ideal types are mapped on the operational and innovation capability. To demonstrate the framework and fine-tune its conceptualization we used the airline industry as surrounding environment: the dynamics and frequent changes in the airline industry provide a fertile ground for M&A research. The framework and typology serves as a well grounded structure to analyze the role of IS in M&A.
