| Abstract | Even though the importance of organizational citizenship behaviors to the functioning of modern organizations is widely recognized, much remains unclear regarding the relationship between these behaviors and their antecedents. To contribute to this gap in the literature, this study sought to empirically examine how support perceptions affect the altruism (OCBI) and compliance (OCBO) dimensions of organizational citizenship behavior. Another objective was to explain different outcomes in these relations. Building on social exchange theory and organizational justice theory, it was hypothesized that perceived coworker support would lead to OCBI and perceived supervisor support would lead to OCBO. Additionally, based on social exchange theory, these relationships were hypothesized to be negatively moderated by task interdependence. In order to gather data to test these hypotheses, surveys were carried out among employees at a Dutch elderly care firm at two different time periods. This resulted in a sample of 185 employees of whom data was gathered in both periods. In accordance with expectations, a positive causal relation was established between perceived coworker support and OCBI. This relation was found to be negatively moderated by task interdependence. Contrary to expectations, perceived supervisor support was found to be not related to OCBO nor was there a moderated relation found for these constructs. |
