| Abstract | This article offers a discussion of the motif of knowing everything as used in the Gospel of John (4:29; 16:30; 18:4; 21:17) and Josephus. The motif is prominent in Josephus’s intriguing story about the Essene Manaemus’s prophecy that the boy Herod (i.e. the later Herod the Great) would become king (Josephus, Jewish Antiquities 15.373-379). Manaemus claims in a dialogue with Herod that he knows everything (15.375). The story about Manaemus and its correspondences with the passages in John are discussed in detail. |
