AbstractDe moderne natuurwetenschappen worden niet makkelijk beschreven als de aanstichters van ‘de onttovering van de wereld’. Dit laat Egil Asprem zien in zijn onderzoek. In plaats daarvan vindt Asprem juist een aantal belangrijke punten van overlap tussen wetenschap, theologie en breed genomen ‘esoterische’ gezichtspunten. Asprem presenteert een nieuwe these over Max Webers notie van de ‘onttovering van de wereld’. Asprem combineerde in zijn onderzoek wetenschapsgeschiedenis met de geschiedenis van religie en esoterie. Hij analyseerde antwoorden op ‘het probleem van onttovering’ in de gevestigde en opkomende wetenschappen van de vroege twintigste eeuw, de toekomstige wetenschap van de parapsychologie en in prominente westers esoterische discoursen.
