SamenvattingDescribes and evaluates the P300 component's biological determinants in normal Ss by using the concept of arousal as an explanatory mechanism. First, the methodological and theoretical background of the P300 is sketched, with the issues surrounding its neurophysiological origins and functional significance outlined and suggestions proffered on how fluctuations in biological state contribute to component generation. Next, the effects of natural (circadian, ultradian, seasonal, menstrual) and environmentally induced (exercise, fatigue, "common" drugs) state variables on the P300 event-related potential are reviewed. Findings indicate that most natural and environmental state factors have significant, nonspecific effects on P300 amplitude and latency.
