| Samenvatting | Large-scale clear-cutting and burning caused the natural upper forest line (UFL) in the Northern Ecuadorian Andes to decline to the point that its 'natural' location now is uncertain. To obtain a detailed reconstruction of the dynamics of the UFL over the last few thousand years, traditional proxies such as pollen analysis alone do not suffice. In an attempt to find new, additional proxies to study past UFL dynamics in the Ecuadorian Andes, we investigated the occurrence of isoprenoids (diterpenes, phytosterols and pentacyclic triterpenes) in the roots and leaves of 19 plant species responsible for the dominant biomass input in the soil and peat records along altitudinal transects covering approx. 600 m above and below the current UFL in two sites in the Northern Ecuadorian Andes. The presence of unique combinations of isoprenoids in relevant (groups of) species, would allow for their use as biomarkers for past vegetation dynamics including the UFL position when preserved well enough in suitable records. Because roots may disturb the chronology of records such as peat and soils, the ideal biomarker is present in leaves but absent from the roots of a relevant species. One diterpene, two phytosterols and three pentacyclic triterpenes studied met the criteria of being uniquely present in the leaves of a single plant species. As such they form potential biomarkers for the Upper Montane Rainforest species Tillandsia sp.2 and Clusia flaviflora Engl., as well as the Sub-Alpine Rainforest species Gynoxys buxifolia [Kunth] Cass. Furthermore, several other isoprenoids, while less specific, may still be of use as (additional) biomarkers. Altogether, the biomarkers found show great potential to be used together with earlier recognized straight-chain lipid biomarkers as additional proxy to traditional ones such as pollen-, phytolit- and vegetation analysis.
