SamenvattingDiscusses "the verzuiling puzzle," the system of intergroup relations in the Netherlands dividing the society into separate religious and social strata. While intergroup theory predicts that the divisiveness of this system would engender intergroup conflict, the Dutch are noted for their strong intergroup tolerance. The authors discuss several studies examining this contradiction (e.g., T. F. Pettigrew and R. W. Meertens, see record 1995-28884-001). These data reveal that the norm of intergroup tolerance in the Netherlands repudiates blatant forms, but often not subtle forms, of group prejudice. Several historical and political explanations for the verzuiling puzzle are suggested.
